Within the spectrum of the "Hard Problem of Consciousness," the mystery of Self is the second-most strange phenomenon. This book addresses that mystery — and explains how subjective experience, emotion, and meaning-making come to be its inseparable parts.
Within the spectrum of the "Hard Problem of Consciousness," the mystery of Self is the second-most strange phenomenon — second only to consciousness itself, which still holds the first position indisputably.
This book takes on the mystery of Self. Because subjective experience and meaning-making are deeply intertwined with it, the book also explains how those two processes begin and become integral parts of Self — or what others call the Mental Self, Psychological Self, or Agency. It explains, in a logical manner, how emotions are built by the meaning-making exercise itself.
As people grow in self-awareness, they are bound to ask: Who am I? Who is this person who believes he is Mrinal, John, Rita, et al — and where, exactly, is this person? Inside the brain? Or is it a soul? Because the way each person acts and speaks in the first person, there has to be a ghost inside the machine (to borrow one of Dr. Christof Koch's favorite phrases).
Good news: whether you believe there is a soul inside the body or not, it does not affect the conclusions of this theory at all. A soul is supposed to be changeless, while the Mental Self explained in the following chapters changes throughout life. A soul never leaves the body before the body perishes — but this Mental Self is completely gone when the body is under a heavy dose of anesthesia. So remain calm and patient as you read on: your belief in the existence of a soul has no bearing whatsoever on the theory of Self presented here.
A concise, 53-page exploration of the Self — and the processes that build it.
Why "who am I" is the second-strangest puzzle in the Hard Problem of Consciousness — and how to approach it.
The same phenomenon by many names — what it actually is, and why understanding it changes how you see yourself.
How "what it feels like" to be you starts, and why it becomes inseparable from the Self.
The exercise the brain runs constantly — and the role it plays in giving life its texture.
Why emotions are made by the meaning-making exercise — explained logically, not vaguely.
Why the theory holds whether or not you believe in a soul — and what each really refers to.

"I am very blessed and delighted that I attended Mrinal's Coaching Program that literally helped me with both my personal and professional life. I currently work as an Associate Director - Customer Success with a SaaS based organization and have been knowing Mrinal for over a decade. I know him as a colleague, a friend and a mentor. My day to day activities involve a lot of meetings and talking to the clients. Mrinal's Coaching Program has helped me a lot and following are the take aways from my side. 1. The program helped me understand my own emotions and how they arise. 2. It helped me to gauge my peak performance and how to really achieve it. 3. It helped me to change my life completely by deep diving into my thoughts and language patterns which I learnt to change and gain complete control of my life both personal and professional. 4. I realised the immense power I have to actually start making my own choices and why previously I felt so powerless due to lack of focus and confidence. 5. The biggest advantage I gained from the NLP Program is that I got to know how to calibrate myself and in addition to it, how to and what to interpret from it. I would like to state that Mrinal Dhar is a very knowledgeable Neuro Coach with an immense wealth of wisdom and love. He is funny, humorous, articulate, sharp, humble and life long friend. In addition to all this, his curiosity, patience, compassion and willingness to listen is mind blowing and unparalleled. I extend my gratitude and thanks to Mrinal for sharing his knowledge and wisdom with me. I would like to wish him Good Luck with all his endeavors."

"Attending Mrinal Dhar’s training program gave me a completely new way of understanding myself. What stood out for me was the powerful idea of the Framework of the Self. Through the program, I learned how the different components within us—our thoughts, emotions, motivations, and actions—operate under the influence of various internal and external forces. For the first time, I could clearly see how these forces shape my decisions, reactions, and patterns of behavior. Mrinal’s framework helped me understand how the “engine of the Self” actually works and, more importantly, how to run it consciously rather than being driven by it unconsciously. This understanding has given me a strong sense of ownership and control over my life. I feel far more autonomous in the way I think, decide, and act. It has accelerated both my personal and professional growth by helping me align my intentions with my actions. Mrinal’s program doesn’t just offer knowledge—it provides a powerful lens to understand oneself and navigate life with clarity, responsibility, and purpose."

"I had the opportunity to work with Mrinal Dhar while he supported our operations at Genpact for a large financial institution in Australia. His ability to quickly build rapport with teams and connect with people at all levels was truly impressive. Mrinal brings deep expertise in soft skills, customer communication, and behavioral coaching. Through his engaging training sessions and practical coaching approach, he helped our teams significantly improve the quality of customer interactions. As a result, we saw a noticeable uplift in our end-customer experience and a meaningful improvement in our Net Promoter Score (NPS). What stood out most was his ability to translate soft skills concepts into real, actionable behaviors that our frontline teams could apply immediately. His impact went beyond training — he played a key role in shaping a more customer-centric mindset within the team. I would highly recommend him to any organization looking to elevate customer experience and build stronger customer-facing teams."

"I had the opportunity to work with Mrinal nearly twenty years ago, and even then, he stood out as someone with remarkable energy, clarity, and conviction. He was dynamic in every sense—deeply curious, creatively inclined, and unafraid to express what he believed in. His passion for theatre brought a unique expressiveness to his work, and he had a natural ability to engage people, challenge assumptions, and spark meaningful conversations. What impressed me most was his vocal honesty. He was clear about what he supported and equally clear about what he didn’t, always grounded in strong values and thoughtful reasoning. That confidence and authenticity made him memorable then—and it’s no surprise to see those same qualities now translated into a successful coaching practice. His ability to communicate, motivate, and connect with people has clearly evolved into a powerful strength, and I have no doubt that those who work with him today benefit greatly from his experience, insight, and passion."

"I had the privilege of working closely with Mrinal during my tenure at Orange Business, and I can confidently say his impact on the campus-to-corporate module delivered for her Grad hires was truly memorable. From the very first session, it was clear that he brings something special to the room—clarity, warmth, and an incredible ability to tell stories that actually stay with you. What I admired most was how effortlessly he connected with Gen Z participants. He didn’t just deliver content; he created an experience. By weaving in humor, real-life examples, and meaningful stories, he made the transition from campus to corporate life feel less intimidating and far more exciting. The energy, engagement, and trust he built with the cohort were remarkable to witness. Working with Mrinal reinforced my belief in the power of authentic learning. He is articulate, empathetic, and deeply passionate about what he does—and it shows in every interaction. I wholeheartedly recommend him to any organization looking for a trainer who can inspire, connect, and leave a lasting impact on young professionals"
